Ok, I know I haven't posted anything in like a year and a half. To be honest, I'm just bad at this shit, but I felt like should post something before 2018 ends. Because I am such a procrastinator, I am posting literally on the last day of the year. Go me 🎉. I decided to go through all of LOONA's MVs and rank them because that's not time consuming or anything. I previously talked about LOONA in this post, this post, and this post. So if you want to check them out, those are the links. If not, I'll give you a quick rundown. I have been listening to LOONA since Haseul's video, so like December 2016. I have watched all of the mvs, and I do like all of them. Ranking them is honestly really hard, especially, when I'm comparing something like Kiss Later to Egoist, completely different types of music, but I love them both. To be honest, this ranking really depends on my mood and what I'm feeling like listening to at any given time. So don't kill me if you think otherwise because by next week, this list will probably change. Also, I did not include The Carol, The Carol 2.0, LOONATIC, 51db, You and Me Together, My Sunday, My Melody, I'll Be There, and alternate versions of the solo songs. I linked the video to each song with the title if you want to check it out.
19. One & Only
I don't have anything against Go Won, but I'm just not a big fan of her voice. I just don't like high pitched voices, which One and Only is ranked last. I wasn't a big fan of the song either. I feel like with her high voice something more cutesy would have worked better, like with what they did with Yeojin. That's why I like the chorus of the song. I think the chorus is cute and really suits her voice better. The "rap" parts were really not my cup of tea. If you got rid of those parts, I probably would have liked the song a lot better. I just cannot really see her voice being used for rap, it really doesn't suit it. That being said, I do not hate Go Won. I just feel that this song is not right for her voice and I wasn't a fan of the song.
18. new
Ok, let me set this straight. I do not hate this song nor do Yves. I just prefer it less to other songs. I don't know why but, I feel like this song really reminds me of like... early 2000's american music?... idk I can't put my finger on what genre it is. And can I just say I had no fucking idea how tf you pronounce Yves for like a solid week after they released her name. I know that has nothing to do with the song but I just had to rant. I'm sorry I just not particularly into this song. There are good aspects though. Yves's voice is great, and I love the melodies used throughout. I just wasn't a big on the background music and with different background music I would have like the song better. I love the whole apple thing since Eve ate the apple and stuff in the Bible. I also enjoyed Vivi being there since there is a whole retro thing happening in the video. I do think that they should have made Yves's red darker in the video, because she's supposed to be crimson, but it just looks like red, which is Kim Lip's color.
17. Around You
I can't help but to sigh at the director's decision to make half the song muted. I understand, it's like she's listening to a song and singing along, but seriously I can't enjoy the song when half of it is muted and interrupted with sounds of a vase breaking and a cat running around. I appreciate how out of all the other videos, this is probably the most artistic, but this is a music video and we need to hear the song. If the first half was played the same as the rest of the song, it would have ranked much higher. There's another version of the music video, the original film version, which does include the entire song that is not half muted, but it is 10 minutes long and I am not watching a 10 video for this song. I'm sorry, Hyunjin is one of my favorite members, and it pisses me off she was done dirty with this. That's way is ranked so low in my list, because the song is great and matches Hyunjin's voice so well. It's just that half the song is muted, which means I cannot enjoy the song in its entirety.
16. Love & Live
I don't know, but I just feel like this is just too generic? Like it just sounds like any other girl group that does a cutesy concept. I don't know. I'm being so critical because I need to think of a way to rank these. I just feel like I was waiting the entire song for something to really come out and hit me face with how epic it sounds, but that never happened. I also think a reason that I'm not in love with the song is that it's very high pitched for my liking. All of the girls have relatively high voices and there's no member with a lower voice to even it out. This could be because the song is using only higher notes because I know they are able to sing lower. That being said, I do love the video the whole training for a track relay race, and ViVi being a robot trying to fit in and be friends with the rest of the human girls is so cute.
15. Sonatine
I would consider this song a ballad of sorts, which was never really my type of music and why it is ranked so low. That being said I still love this song, and from a ballad perspective I really like it. The orchestration is great, I love love love orchestration. The whole tango-like "dance break" was great, and was honestly my favorite part of the song. The video was a pretty basic ballad style video with a lot of clips of them singing.
14. Kiss Later
I love the jazzy show tune sort of vibe the song gives, but (I'm so sorry! I love you, Yeojin!) Yeojin's voice is just a bit to high for my liking and the autotune at parts.. ugh... That being said, I think that the song really suits her voice, unlike Go Won's. It has a very lively and sweet sound, which I think Go Won's should have had. The video itself is also so cute and bright, which suits her perfectly. The orchestration in the song is also great, I love it.
13. Everyday I Love You
I love the retro vibe of this video. The whole roller skate thing, the 90s shooting style, the 90s clothing, that hella old computer. Also, having the other members appear made me so happy, especially with Yeojin, because we hadn't seen her in a while. Again, Vivi has a high voice, which isn't my cup of tea, but the song totally fit her voice. Even though, she's the oldest member of the group she totally fits this sort of fresh and cutesy concept. I remember when this song came out it was stuck in my head for weeks, it's so freaking catchy.
12. love4eva
The spelling... I have nothing to say. The song itself is great. I love it it's so upbeat, right up my alley. The intro really reminds me of SNSD's Gee. I talked to my friend about it when it first came out and it's because E-Tribe co-wrote the song, who also wrote Gee. I dock points for this because of that dance break part at 2:35, which really isn't my style of music and I don't really think that it fits with the rest of the song, which is probably the part where Grimes is featured, who is a Canadian EDM artist. That chorus, though, is so catchy. Also, can I just say how I love Chuu's singing voice. However, I could have lived without the "Gee" intro. The video story was kind of depressing though, because seeing Olivia Hye be ostracized and left behind was so sad.
11. Hi High
I gotta say that the starting synth was so high pitched it physically hurt my ears. This song seriously reminds me of love4eva. I don't know. The major issue I have is the line distribution. I understand, with twelve members having an equal line distribution is close to impossible. I understand that Heejin, Kim Lip, and Jinsoul are probably the more popular members, but the other girls need parts too. Here's a link to a line distribution video, so you can see how uneven it is. This also happened for screen time as well where Heejin got significantly more screen time than the other girls. Now don't get me wrong I love Heejin, but I believe all the girls deserve a chance to shine. That being said, Heejin's part in the bridge was great, I love her voice. Despite the screen time distribution, I love the video. It combines all of the others to make it like a story showing how they all gathered together. All of the references were great and I really appreciated all of them.
10. Love Cherry Motion
I'm sure you see the trend but I loved all the song except for the dance break parts and bridge. It's like they combined two different songs, but I just felt like it doesn't fit. I would have preferred if there were just two different songs. After listening to it multiple times, I have become okay with those parts, but I deducted points for it because I still don't feel that as a whole song, the two parts flowed. I love the other parts so much though because it was so bright and was perfect for summer. The video is also great. I love the how it starts out as one of those having fun and hanging out videos into her traveling to another dimension/plane every time she eats a cherry. The directing for this video was great. I loved how every time she ate the cherry they would play that break (even though I don't like the break).
9. Let Me In
Again, this is a ballad of sorts, which I'm not really into, but I love the way the song picks up. The chorus is great and so is the orchestration. If you haven't noticed I really love orchestration. Even though it is a ballad, I really like this song. I can't really explain it, it really flows and doesn't drag like I feel like other ballads do. I also love the ending. It's kind of sudden, and I like it a lot better than the whole musical outro thing a lot of ballads do or with a sustaining note or something. The video itself was kind of artistic, which I liked. Her being a bird and stuff was kind of cool. I gotta say props to Haseul for sticking with that super rainy and cold weather for that video.
8. favOriTe
The line distributions -.-. I can't get over these goddamn line distributions. These screen time distributions also are just... ugh. I just feel like it's Heejin, Kim Lip and Jinsoul all the time. Other than that, I really do like the song. It's super catchy and is honestly great for really large groups, like LOONA, since it has so many different parts. Idk it's a simple song, I liked it. Also Jinsoul's adlibs at the end were gold, damn. The video itself is also super simple. It's just choreography and close ups, which I'm totally ok with. Anyway good song and video. Sometimes less is more.
7. Sweet Crazy Love
I love this song. The only issue I really had was that music faded when the ear bud came out of Jinsoul's ear which really isn't an issue really because that's an artistic choice in directing and it was only for like a couple of seconds. Talking about the artistic choices for directing, I love the black and white in the beginning with the colors in the end, like that is gorgeous. Choerry in the dance parts with her parted that way looks so good 😍. I also love the end of the video with Kim Lip and the bag which brought it back to Eclipse.
6. Singing in the Rain
I remember when this song came out and I was so disappointed about the lack of rapping because she is/was supposed to be the rapper of the group. I still think they should have given her rap song instead of like a singing song, if that makes sense? That being said, I do like the song. I wrote a whole post on it at this link. I think my opinions there kind of speak for themselves.
5. Egoist
I think this song is very... current? It's definitely in the direction where a lot of the really popular kpop groups seem to be heading. I really do like the song. The piano chord intro with the simple beats and Olivia Hye singing. Then it picks up to the chorus, which is great. And Jinsoul's rap... that rap break was epic, best part of the song. I was waiting for something like that for such a long time. Also unlike usual, I really like the dance break part. I also love the whistling parts. Overall, great song. The video was pretty cool, I loved when Heejin appeared at the end to make this come full circle.
4. Girl Front
I love the references in this song. I also love how bright it is both visually and audibly. I am not a fan of the part that starts at 0:27 and is repeated throughout the song, which is why it is not ranked higher, because I love the rest of the song so much, especially the second verse. So good. However, after listening to the song so much I still love this song, and that part doesn't bother me anymore. The video is also really bright and fun with the girls going on some sort of treasure hunt. Hyunjin's cameo, though 😀
3. ViViD
I love this song. It's such a LOONA classic. In general, it really is such a good song. I don't know why but it is always stuck in my head. Heejin's voice is great, which obviously adds to the appeal of the song. The video is also so fun and bright, which makes it just an overall entertaining and fun video.
2. Heart Attack
From the second they showed that name card at 0:10, I knew, I knew, that this song was going to be bomb. I must say out of all of the girls I really like Chuu's voice the best. In general, I tend to prefer a warmer tone? for singing, if that makes sense? Anyway, this song was a perfect combination of super cheerful and girl crush? I honestly have no clue wtf I'm talking about. It's just super fun to listen to and has a great groove. I love how the video has the little match girl story. I really love references to literature? Would little match girl be considered literature?
1. Eclipse
I love this song so much. It's such a bop, but it's not in your face. Kim Lip's voice is so soft and smooth, and the song never gets particularly loud, but it really moves, kind of like how Let Me In flows for me. I liked it so much I wrote a whole post on it at this link, which pretty much explains why I ranked it here.
19. One & Only
I don't have anything against Go Won, but I'm just not a big fan of her voice. I just don't like high pitched voices, which One and Only is ranked last. I wasn't a big fan of the song either. Anyway, this is how I ranked all of LOONA's main songs to date. I know I didn't include the songs above, but I wanted to do all their solos, subunit material, and full group material, since those are more of their main stuff. I am hoping that Blockberry fixes this whole line distribution thing because I don't want it to become Heejin and her back up singers. All of the girls were talented enough to have their own single and I want all of them to shine. Again, this is my opinion, and I do like and listen to all of the songs. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this insanely long post. I'm sorry was lazy af last year/this year and that I didn't post at all. I have a couple of ideas of stuff I want to post about so I'll try to at least post once a month. Also Happy New Year!!!! 🎇 So... um... yeah...
